What to Expect as a Medical Coder and Biller

A Medical Coder and Biller in a healthcare setting is responsible for translating medical diagnoses, treatments and procedures into standardized codes used for billing and insurance purposes. On a day-to-day basis, they review patient records, assign the appropriate codes to diagnoses and procedures, ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations, and submit claims to insurance companies for reimbursement. They work regularly with medical charts, patient records, insurance claims, coding manuals, and billing software to ensure that all services provided are properly documented and billed.

Program Information

A high school diploma or GED is required and students should have basic proficiency in using a computer or laptop. 

Throughout this 12-week program, students will complete coursework at their own pace, with access to an instructor for support as needed. 

By completing this program students will: 

  • Understand the derivation, rules, and pronunciation of healthcare terms
  • Learn medical terms for anatomy, directional terms, body organization, and related systems
  • Distinguish Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D, and understand HIPAA rules and Medicare fraud programs
  • Locate information in the Federal Register and explain RBRVS and managed healthcare components
  • Master E/M code assignment, differentiating new/established patients and inpatient/outpatient services
  • Analyze E/M codes, documentation guidelines, and factors like time and decision-making
  • Familiarize yourself with cardiovascular and respiratory system terminology, disorders, and diagnostic procedures
  • Understand anesthesia types, coding, modifiers, and the anesthesia formula
