What is a Certified Nursing Assistant?
The next cohort of the Certified Nursing Assistant program starts January 27 through 4/18.
Under the supervision of a Registered Nursed (RN) or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN), a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct care to patients. Nursing assistants give personal, hands-on care to patients by providing assistance with essential daily tasks. These tasks include bathing, dressing, eating, as well as observing & reporting to the LPN/RN, ambulating & repositioning patients, taking & recording vital signs, and communicating with other team members about patients.

How do you become a Certified Nursing Assistant?
- During this 12-week program, your weekly schedule would include:
- 1 – 3 hours per day of online learning.
- One weekly, 3-hour lab session at Mercy University's Bronx Campus. 6 lab sessions, for 6 hours each.
- One live online session with an instructor.
- The instructor will review concepts for that week’s module.
- Ask questions and receive support on any concepts that you are unsure about.
- After completing the curriculum, you will engage in a 30-hour externship.
- This Certified Nursing Assistant program will prepare you for the New York State (NYS) Nursing Home Nurse Aide Competency Examination.
